Private Conflict Tracking

WikiTree has a very open and collaborative community. Our rules are made together, including our rules on conflict escalation. We want our system to be fair to everyone.

However, conflicts can escalate unnecessarily if everything is public. Moreover, sensitive or private information might be included in Conflict Help Forms.

Therefore, the output of most forms and the tracking of the escalation process is private to the Mediators group. Mediators are a subset of WikiTree Project Leaders. They are all volunteers, but they are trusted community leaders who have earned their status through impeccable adherence to the WikiTree Honor Code.

Mentor Intervention Request (MIR) Privacy

If a Mentor is assigned, the Mediators group will generally forward the MIR to that Mentor.

Although the assigned Mentor may not be a WikiTree Project Leader, all Mentors are trusted community members. They may share details with other Mentors, but they are expected to not share them with others.

The member who is the subject of the MIR will not generally see it. There is one exception: If the conflict ultimately escalates to account closure, the member has the option to request a public summary. This is extremely rare.

Mediation Request Form (MRF) Privacy

Unlike with MIRs, Mediation Request Form (MRF) output is sent to the member or members who are the subject(s) of the conflict. This is part of the formal mediation procedure.

MRFs are always submitted by Mentors or Mediators after an MIR. Mentors and Mediators know to word them carefully.

MRFs are not shown to community members who are not a party to the conflict. Again, the one exception is that if a conflict ultimately escalates to account closure, the member has the option to request a public summary.
